11.12.2013 Minister Fitzgerald announces €1.5 million capital funding for 30 new Youth Cafés

Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, has today (11th December 2013) announced the allocation of  €1.5million in capital funding for the provision of 30 new Youth Cafés in communities across the country.The 30 new Youth Cafés (listed below) were selected on foot of a call for applications earlier this year and selection process overseen by Pobal and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

27.11.2013 Government announces €30m investment in new ABC (Area-Based Childhood) Programme

Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, has today announced that an additional nine areas have been selected to enter the design stage of the Area-Based Childhood (ABC) Programme 2013-2016 in line with a key Programme for Government commitment. This bring the total number of areas to 13, as three existing projects which participated in a forerunner PEIP programme in Tallaght, Ballymun and Darndale have already been approved for entry into the new ABC Programme, and a further project in the Midlands is being included, linked to the existing 'Preparing for Life' project in Darndale. The new projects are listed below.

15.10.2013 Government investing in important reforms for children and families – Fitzgerald

Reforming Child Protection - Additional funding of €6.7 million in 2014 to support reform of child welfare and protection services; Implementing the Pre-School Quality Agenda – funding of €4.5 million to: Recruit additional pre-school inspectors Establish a pre-school mentoring service Support staff training Tacking Child Poverty - Additional €1.5m for implementation of the Area Based Childhood (ABC) programme, a joint initiative between DCYA and Atlantic Philanthropies to improve outcomes for children in disadvantaged communities. Almost €30 million will be spent on this initiative during the period 2013-2016. Whole-of-Government support for Children and Families also evident in free GP care for children aged 5 years and under and in maintenance of Child Benefit rates.

14.10.2013 Oberstown construction demonstrates Government commitment to implementing long-awaited reforms – Fitzgerald

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Ms. Frances Fitzgerald TD has today officially launched the construction project for new child detention facilities, to increase capacity and improve services on the Oberstown campus, Lusk, Co. Dublin. Minister Fitzgerald said the start of construction on the Oberstown project further demonstrated the Government commitment's to implementing long-awaited reforms. The main objective of this project is to implement the Programme for Government commitment to end the detention of children in adult prison facilities.
