This study examined slipped upper femoral epiphysis fixation with a single screw
Abstract:
We conducted a retrospective, clinical and radiological study of fixation with a single screw in slipped upper femoral epiphysis. Forty children (53 hips) who had a slipped upper femoral epiphysis were managed by in-situ pinning with a single cannulated screw. The average age of these patients was 12.7 years and their average weight was above the 50th centile at the time of diagnosis. more...

This case report discusses the case of a three-year-old girl referred to our fracture clinic as an occult osteomyelitis fracture following trauma to her forearm with normal initial radiographs
Abstract:
Paediatric subacute osteomyelitis (SAO) presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to clinicians. Typically located in the metaphysis of long bones, diaphyseal SAO of the upper limb is rare. We present the case of a three-year-old girl referred to our fracture clinic as an occult fracture following trauma to her forearm with normal initial radiographs. Follow-up radiographs one more...

Abstract:
We report a case of successful renal transplantation in a child with Kabuki syndrome. We discuss the potential problems that might be encountered following kidney transplantation in children with Kabuki syndrome, and the management of these problems. We conclude that kidney transplantation is a feasible and appropriate treatment option for renal impairment in children with this syndrome. more...

This study examined renal transplantation in children with spina bifida
Abstract:
We report long-term follow up data on cadaveric renal transplantation for end stage renal failure (ESRF) in spina bifida children. Between February 1989 and July 2001, 12 cadaveric renal transplants were performed in 10 children, eight females and two males. Mean age at transplantation was 13.4 yr (range 9-16). Of the patients, eight were wheelchair bound and two were independently more...

This study examined 16 years of children with Symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum
Abstract:
Meckel's diverticulum (MD) has varied presentations and often becomes a diagnostic challenge. The purpose of this study was to review the various presentations of symptomatic MD and to assess the sensitivity of the Meckel's scan as a diagnostic tool in patients with bleeding MD. The hospital records of 71 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of MD from 1990 to 2005 were retrospectively more...

The aim of this study was to examine use of the Amplatzer device in 150 patients with interatrial communications
Abstract:
The Amplatzer Septal Occluder is made from a Nitinol wire mesh shaped into 2 disks with a connecting waist, which serves to center the device in the defect while occluding it. The Amplatzer device is also available in a configuration with no central waist for use in patients with patent oval foramen, or multi-perforated aneurysm of the interatrial septum. This case report discusses use of a Fogarty balloon with extraction forceps for the controlled retrieval of an endobronchial foreign body
Abstract:
Foreign body aspiration is a common problem in children necessitating prompt recognition and early treatment to minimize the potentially serious and sometimes even fatal consequences. We report the case of a 7 year old girl with a peanut lodged in her right main bronchus. Bronchoscopy identified the foreign body which was then removed by the combined use of a Fogarty balloon catheter more...

The aim of this study was to describe the natural history of early onset scoliosis before 10 years of age
Abstract:
A retrospective analysis of the natural history and treatment outcome of scoliosis, both idiopathic and syndromic, presenting before age 10 years was undertaken. This case report discusses the case of a non-ambulant, 13-year-old boy from Chernobyl, who did not have access to early replacement therapy, and whose deformity was managed using the Ilizarov external fixator
Abstract:
Severe factor IX deficiency is an X-linked disorder which gives rise to spontaneous and often life-threatening bleeds. The major source of morbidity worldwide is recurrent haemarthroses, giving rise to joint destruction and deformity. However, the incidence of spontaneous haemarthroses has decreased since the advent of prophylactic home-based, on-demand, early replacement therapy. We more...

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and toxicity of the two drugs for childhood lymphoblastic leukaemia
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: 6-mercaptopurine has been a standard component of long-term continuing treatment for childhood lymphoblastic leukaemia, whereas 6-thioguanine has been mainly used for intensification courses. Since preliminary data have shown that 6-thioguanine is more effective than 6-mercaptopurine, we compared the efficacy and toxicity of the two drugs for childhood lymphoblastic more...

This study examined 5 patients who underwent percutaneous transhepatic Broviac insertion for long-term access over a 4-year period in a single institution
Abstract:
Vascular access in paediatric patients with chronic and/or life-threatening illness is crucial to survival. Access is frequently lost in this group because of thrombosis, infection, or displacement, and vascular options can quickly be exhausted. The last resort access procedure is generally a direct atrial catheter inserted via a thoracotomy. A viable alternative is the percutaneous more...

This study examined factors influencing final height in those with Turner syndrome and evaluate the response to various treatments
Abstract:
Short stature is an almost universal feature of Turner Syndrome (TS) with patients having a mean adult height up to 20 cm less than that of the general female population. As a result a significant focus of medical management in TS is on growth promoting strategies. The aim of this study was to examine the laboratory diagnosis of patients with phaeochromocytoma, one with malignant paraganglioma and one with ganglioneuroblastoma.
Abstract:
We report a 12-year laboratory experience in the diagnosis of 37 patients with phaeochromocytoma, one with malignant paraganglioma and one with ganglioneuroblastoma. Surgery was performed in eight different hospitals, which underlines the difficulty of ensuring uniformity of investigations. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of long-term homocysteine-lowering treatment in reducing vascular risk
Abstract:
An inborn error of metabolism, homocystinuria due to cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency, results in markedly elevated levels of circulating homocysteine. Premature vascular events are the main life-threatening complication. Half of all untreated patients have a vascular event by 30 years of age. The aim of this study was to examine Wilm's tumor gene 1 expression patterns in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Abstract:
