Aims & Objectives:
This article discusses the need to understand the broader world of psychological research on trauma to inform the practice of psychologists and to guide them in working with client group
Abstract:
Working with those affected by the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland is not something entered into lightly. The often complex world of trauma, its treatments, successes and failures is further confused by the social, cultural and political context in which counseling psychologists may find themselves working in. Firstly, anyone who attempts to understand what has happened in Northern Ireland must appreciate that for 30 years the visitor to the region would not necessarily have had any contact with the violence but they almost certainly, would have experienced a day-to-day normality in which children were engaged in normal childhood pursuits of schooling, sport and all the other past times which are available to the European child. Many people believe that the current period of violent conflict, the 'Troubles', in Northern Ireland is (almost) at an end. Placing our work in context is a helpful starting point but it is also important to look at the broader world of psychological research on trauma to inform our practice and guide us in working with our client group.
