Aims & Objectives:
This article discusses the importance of "looked after" children participating in their own health care and presents research into rates and types of participation
Abstract:
The article discusses the importance of "looked after" children participating in their own health care and presents research into rates and types of participation. "Looked after" children are at higher risk for physical and mental health problems. Great Britain's amended Children's Act of 2004 requires that "looked after" children be afforded the right to some autonomy in health care decisions, similar to that of children in a traditional home setting. Research has shown that "looked after" children tend to be acted on by adults instead of acting themselves. The article calls for further research into the health care participation of "looked after" children in theoretical terms, to add to the legally-oriented research presented here.
