Book Review: Mother and child: Maternity and child welfare in Dublin,
Abstract:
Reviews the book, Mother and child: Maternity and child welfare in Dublin, 1922-60 by Lindsey Earner-Byrne (2007). This publication explores in detail the development of maternity and child welfare services in Dublin during the early decades following independence, is a most valuable contribution to the historiography. Tracing the roles, and interaction, of Church, State, the medical profession and voluntary groups, Lindsey Earner-Byrne demonstrates how both religion and tradition influenced the development of a maternity policy which, as she points out, had important implications for female 'social rights of citizenship.' This volume brings the wealth of detailed and insightful analysis to a topic of overriding interest and significance in Irish social history. It is not a 'light' read; its production has entailed rigorous research of a comprehensive range of sources which are carefully scrutinised. But only by mainstreaming women's experience in this way, and by placing local developments in their national and international contexts, can we begin to fully appreciate the subtly nuanced complexities which, by determining the past, have shaped the present.
