Aims & Objectives:
The article discusses the structural causes of sex abuse of children in Northern Ireland
Abstract:
In Northern Ireland there are unacceptable high levels of all forms of abuse and little real investment or political will in pre-devolutional context to tackle the causes behind it. In relation to sexual abuse in 2000/2001 (Personal Social Services and Related Statistics DHSSPS) over 700 sexual offences were reported to the police. Putting it another way, in any average week in Northern Ireland 2 children will be raped and a further 10 indecently assaulted. In human terms it is a truly staggering figure. To comprehensively tackle the structural causes of sex abuse of children in Northern Ireland, it is necessary to bring about a cultural change at a number of different levels in our society. This was the reason the NSPCC in 1999 launched its Full Stop Campaign, one of its key components being to bring about government and public change through high profile campaigns including those in the media.
