Aims & Objectives:
The aim of this study was to report on the concordance between mother-infant attachment at 18 months and maternal attachment 10 years later among married and single mothers
Abstract:
Examined the concordance between infant-mother attachment at 18 mo, assessed in the Strange Situation, and maternal representations of attachment, assessed by the Adult Attachment Interview over 10 yrs later. Ss were 20 mother-infant dyads selected for heterogeneity, and included 15 infants classified secure and 5 classified insecure at 18 mo. 12 mothers were married (mean age 25 yrs) and 8 were single (mean age 20 yrs). Results show that the concordance between mother-infant attachment was low. For the 3 "organized" categories (avoidant/dismissing, secure/secure, and resistant/preoccupied), the match was 35% for the 2-way secure-insecure split, and 30% for the 3 categories. Mother-infant concordance was significantly higher for the married-mother (50%) than the single-mother group (12.5%). For the infants, there was a somewhat above-average proportion of secure classifications (75%). The distribution of secure classifications was different for married (67%) and single mothers (25%) for the 3-category system. The proportion of preoccupied classifications (63%) among the single mothers was unusually high. Contextual constraints discussed include marital status, multiple caretaker environments, high maternal grandmother involvement, and previous experience of infant caretaking.
