Aims & Objectives:
The aim of this study was to examine the impact of early educational experience on later cognitive developmental outcomes for 396 Irish 4 yr olds
Abstract:
Examined the impact of early educational experience on later cognitive developmental outcomes for 396 Irish 4 yr olds. The early educational settings (preschool services and junior infant classes at primary schools) included those schools designated disadvantaged (DD) and those that were not DD. At age 4, the cognitive developmental status measures assessed knowledge and skills in spatial relations, quantity and time; at age 7, the measures assessed spatial relations, quantity, time, memory and problem-solving. Other variables included mother's education. Results indicate that 4 yr olds attending national schools experienced a more formal early education than those in preschools. Children who attended DD preschools at age 4 and were attending DD schools at age 7, achieved a significantly lower mean cognitive score at age 7 when compared to all other groups. There was also a gender difference in cognitive development at age 7. Boys attending DD schools achieved a significantly lower score than all other groups. The authors conclude that a more formal approach to early education may yield short term academic gains, but caution that children may not develop skills of autonomous learning, interest or involvement in learning necessary for later school success.
