Book Review: Child Protection Work-Beyond the Rhetoric
Abstract:
Reviews the book Child Protection Work-Beyond the Rhetoric by Helen Buckley (2003), in which the author explores the passage and processing by her social work colleagues of the referrals from the point of entry and "intake" through initial screening and, for some, the provision of a service. The author's account of the operation of the child protection process in one Health Board at a time of "unprecedented development" in the Irish child welfare system provides a unique and fascinating insight into the realities of practice. The reviewer suggests that the meticulous nature of the research presented and the clarity of analysis does constitute a thought-provoking and useful text that will assist practitioners, theorists and others interested in understanding the challenges for social workers involved in child protection and the influences on their practice.
